Focus on Others

Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
Matthew 6:26 ESV

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
James 1:27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 14:27

Our daily temptation is to become anxious about our own wants & needs; to seek control over the things that we rely upon. The temptation we each endure is to trust in ourselves more than God, or at least if we do trust in him, to do so with restraint and an insurance plan.

Of course, there is wisdom is planning before building, and in seeking to steward well that which has been entrusted to us. But, we should no less be careful not to fall victim to the temptation to worry ourselves into peace, as if that were possible.

Rather, we should consider others more important that ourselves. We, Christian men, should take advantage of our opportunity to pray and provide for others, trusting the Lord to provide adequately for us.

We should do this not that we might be “good people,” but rather in order to give and direct glory to God. We should focus first on the needs of others, like widows, orphans, the impoverished, and our fellow church members, because we seek to satisfy the God-infused Spirit within us more than the flesh in which we live, and because we willingly obey the directives of our God.

Undoubtedly, anxieties nag at you. Money and health and family and politics and anxiety-ridden people all clamor for your attention. Nonetheless, I hope that you will be encouraged by God’s word to entrust yourself to Him, and seek to be of service to others, when and where possible.

You will be okay. His grace is sufficient.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 14:27
